Join us in benefitting our neighbors in need this holiday season by supporting our annual Hickman House giving tree now through Dec 21. Hickman House offers transitional housing for women and children who are recovering from domestic violence. Participating is simple:
1. Choose a star from our tree at CAPERS
2. Purchase the wish
3. Return the unwrapped gift to CAPERS by Dec 21
Hickman House then collects the items each week leading up to the holiday and wraps and delivers the gifts.
Having sponsored the program for 28 years, CAPERS owner Lisa Myers shared, “For many families, it’s become an annual tradition to bring in their kids to choose a star from our tree and help other children in need. We’re proud that it continues to be such a great learning tool about how to give back to the community.”
One of three confidential sanctuaries developed by The Salvation Army to address domestic violence through programs that promote safety, healing and empowerment, Hickman House assists hundreds of domestic violence survivors each year.
Established in 1988, the Hickman House fully-furnished 10-unit apartment complex and transitional housing program helps families exiting emergency shelters return to self-sufficient living.
“It allows families time to gather resources to become economically independent and to strengthen their social support while living in a safe, supportive environment,” said Myers.
Stays range from six to 24 months with program fees costing just 30 percent of a client’s income, regardless of how low that might be. The program offers:
Safety planning and individual supportive counseling
Domestic violence and parenting support groups
Referrals to helpful community resources
Children’s advocacy and support groups
Affordable housing referrals, information, and advocacy
“Our customers and neighbors throughout West Seattle have been so generous over the years helping us provide in-kind donations for the program – from toys to everyday household items. We can’t thank them enough,” said Myers.
